Karst Topography

Karst  topography is usually characterized by barren, rocky ground, caves, sinkholes, underground rivers, and the absence of surface streams and lakes. It results from the excavating effects of underground water on soluble limestone rocks. The term originally applied to the Karst (or Kras) physiographic region, a limestone area northeast of the Gulf of Trieste in Slovenia, but has been extended to mean all areas with similar features.Limestone region is usually like a magical world in itself. It is beautiful but fragile, and vulnerable to erosion and pollution.
